Homes and Hearts

Good evening all, It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Open House on Friday night. Thanks for coming - we hope you had fun and found it useful.

I wanted to specifically focus on two topics in this communication:

1 - We have a hurricane a' coming. Maybe. Possibly. Definitely. Or not. Hopefully you are all heeding the warnings and making your preparations. Here's a great list from local meteorologist Denis Phillips.

One of the big things is for the kinds of wind speeds that might hit us, is that for everything outside your home that isn't tied down, to either secure it or move it inside. This is to protect your and your neighbors homes. We want to avoid flying missiles hurtling through windows and doing avoidable damage.

As you are doing that for your home, I would ask you to give a thought for your neighbors who might be less capable, through age, disability or absence, to move or secure their own stuff.

2 - OK. That's "home" covered, but what about "heart"?. To be honest, I think the two are related and I'll tell you why.

I've spent a lot of time with our newly formed social committee recently and they are kind hearted people who are thinking of everyone in our community. As we've been considering events, and just talking in general, the above thoughts about helping neighbors with hurricane preparedness come out, but so has this concept of "The Hearts of our Community".

This concept is being born out of a desire for us as individuals and families, as a community, to help those in our community who might not be able to helps themselves so well. Who might not have friends or family around during the holidays. Who might be alone or worse still, lonely.

The "Hearts of our Community" is an idea, that will be communicated firstly here, but won't be a Board thing, won't be a Social Committee thing, it will, however, be a you thing. A giving back thing. An individual or group kindness thing. In these early discussions it's definitely something I want my family to engage in. I want to teach my son, through experience, how it feels to perform selfless acts of kindness to others.

It's a hard thing to organize, so for right now, we are going to use the social.fshoa@gmail.com email address just to collect names and details of people who are interested in getting involved, in any capacity.

Here's the first two thoughts:

We'd like to ensure that any homebound, elderly or alone in our community know that they are not forgotten at Thanksgiving and Christmas (or your holiday season). So thought one, is we collectively identify those neighbors we know who live alone and might enjoy a holiday dinner at the clubhouse and we find ways to coordinate picking up, dropping off and serving food.

Thought two, is that those people, might not wish, for any number of reasons, to be part of a gathering, but would still be hugely benefitted by having a hot, holiday meal delivered to them.

These are just the first two. I'm very confident that there is so much more that can be added to this list.

Let us know in the comments below or via that email address, what your thoughts are. Help us identify those who don't get out, aren't on computers receiving this communication, whether and how you'd like to contribute or help out in some way.

With all that said, look after your homes, be safe and thank you for being the heart of our community.
